Replacement intervals depends on your usage and type of filter. The average house with a quality filter (Merv 13 or better) and normal usage will need to be replaced every 3 to 6 months. During the hot summer and cold winter months, you may need to change every month. We recommend checking your filter every month and replace as needed. Your system should have a complete check out and cleaning twice a year. Usually at the end of each season. We recommend the end of heating season service in March, April or May and the end of cooling season service in October or November. this should include an inspection of all the electrical components and wiring, visual inspection of all refrigeration connections for any leaks, a coil cleaning once a year and a filter change as needed.
If you are hearing a noise that you have not heard before, we recommend shutting off your system at the thermostat and calling your HVAC company. Loud noises can be caused by fan systems that are rubbing and something has come loose or compressor issues at the outdoor unit.
When a cooling system is running it creates water (condensate) and this water must be drained to a proper location. If proper maintenance is not done on a regular basis, the drain lines can get plugged and cause the water to back up in the system and drain out. If your system does not have an overflow pan to catch this water, then it will drain out into your attic space and can cause damage to your ceiling joists and sheet rock ceilings. This can be a very costly repair. If you see water, shut the system down and call a qualified repair company.
There are many different types of thermostats on the market and picking one is a personal preference. If you are someone that likes the ability to make changes from anywhere, then we recommend a smart thermostat that are app-enabled. If you are home all day and keep the system at one temperature all day then an expensive smart thermostat may be more then what you need. Give us a call and we can walk you through the best thermostat for your situation.
